NHS Dietician?

<< < (2/3) > >>

ansteynomad:
Thanks for all your responses.  It's the usual NHS lottery then.

I am taking a maintenance dose of Vitamin D.

I would like to see them label me IBS!  I had IBS for 30 years after a bad bout of food poisoning.  At one point I had had diarrhoea for a year and weighed less than 7 stone.  That's IBS!  Even when that settled down I had residual symptoms for years, but since I started the T3, all those symptoms have disappeared, which is wonderful.

I just want to find a way of arresting the weight gain.

Finally I have been referred and have an appointment on 9 November.

I have received the usual patronising letter telling me she will want to talk to me about my meals, drinks and snacks, but I have not been asked to do any prep work or keep a food diary or anything.

Is this usual?

Another NHS fail I'm afraid.  As soon as I got in there she said that she did not really understand why I had been referred to her as she works with diabetics and not people with PCOS.  I pointed out that I do not have PCOS and she looked again at the referral, which was completely wrong.

She was unable whether or not I should be gluten free - endo said I should but my hypo is not auto immune and I am not coeliac and she was unable to comment on the connection (if any) between T3 and weight gain.

Personally, she was lovely, and she confirmed there is nothing wrong with my diet, but really it was more time off work and another hour and a half on the bus for nothing.

Meanwhile I have put on another 5lbs in the last six weeks.

Much to my surprise, the dietitian phoned me at home today to say that she had spoken to one of her colleagues who knows about hypo.

She told me that my metabolism is running so slow that I have no prospect of losing any weight at all unless I cut out all carbs, and I mean all carbs, so not only the obvious potatoes, rice, pasta, bread, etc, but also most fruits and a lot of vegetables, and severely limit dairy, so I would be eating eggs, lean meat and fish, salad and some veg only.

Her colleague had also told her that I was over-medicated and would need to reduce my meds, which we both agreed was contradictory, so really I am no further on.

It was good of her to phone me though.

Hi Mrs Nomad!

I think it is a no-go to try to loose weight while under-medicated so how are you doing there? Weren't you on Armor or some other NDT?

I think things have to stabilise and you to feel good first, then maybe loose  weight.

But when it is time, I think low-carb works wonders.

I haven't come that far in treatment though but am preparing for it.
