Is hypothyroidism is classed as a disability?
kris:
Hello, sorry to barge in on your conversation, im a new member here and have been trying to post a message too ask if hypothyroidism is classed as a disability, but i cant find how to post a message, but noticed this conversation so thought id ask you, is it a disability? Ive been diagnosed for 2yrs and medication still not right but im not too bad really except for aches pains, susceptable to flu a lot! And depression and anxiety. But i work in care home and its exhausting 12hr shifts and i dont know what to tell my employer when i call in sick because 'im too tired' doesnt seem a reasonable excuse and to be honest i feel a bit pathetic saying it. I may get fired soon or put on disciplinary and want to find out where i stand. Can you give me any advice please, it would be much appreciated!?
Thankyou x

Hi Kris,
bxb!!x to the forum.
Sorry you're having troubles with working, that's something a lot of people here can relate with.
I'm guessing you might need an increase in your medication as it sounds like you still have a lot of symptoms.
If you'd like to post a new topic in the welcome section to introduce yourself then I think more people here will see it. What you need to do is click on the link below which takes you to the Welcome Section and then in the top right corner is a button called 'New Topic' - hit that and away you go with your own new thread.

Hi Kris
When I was first diagnosed (Feb 09) I struggled big time with work in the health service, I was referred to OH and was advised to do a phased return which meant reducing my hours but on full pay. One of the letters sent to my manager said that hypothyroidism is covered by the disability discrimination act, hope this helps

Hi Kris & bxb!!x
Sorry you're feeling so bad ghus
I've split the topic you originally posted in so you've got your own thread with a more relevant title now which should help you to get more replies.
If you put disability into the search box you'll find lots of previous posts which should help you. Try http://thyroid-disease.org.uk/index.php?option=com_smf&Itemid=99999999&action=search2
If you find out your test results and post them on here we can try to help you with that too.

Hi Kris I'm hypo/hashis and I am currently off work at the moment and have been for the last six weeks! I can tell you that you are covered by the dda ( disability discrimination act ) There are certain parts of the act that apply and if you google dda you will hopefully find the bits that apply to you. Its quite long and complicated but I'M 100% sure your covered as I'm using it at present. Good luck oh and bxb!!x Amanda x
